Board of Trustees

Our Mission and Membership: The RBCS Board of Trustees is the policy-making body of the school. These policies provide guidance to the administration on instruction, personnel, fiscal and business management, facilities, and community relations. Along with the administration, the BoT also is responsible for two-way communication among the RBCS community.

The RBCS BoT is comprised of nine members. Six are nominated and elected by the BoT. We have just elected our newest member, Roger Foss. Three BoT members are nominated and elected by a majority of the parent/guardian community. Each member has a three-year term, and there are no limits on the number of terms that a member can serve. Therefore, each year one parent-nominated board seat will be up for re-election. The three parent-elected members are Kevin Kelleher, Kathy McGuire, and Michelle Welsh. We will be sending out a notice for nominees in a few weeks and the vote will take place in May. This new BoT member would be seated at the June board meeting.

Present members of the BoT are as follows:

Bruce Whitaker, President. When Patty and I enrolled our daughter Anna (5th gr) at RBCS, I had no plans to become this involved in the school. In fact, I knew very little about the Charter School! But when asked in 2006 to join the BoT and run for President, given the circumstances, it was not something one can turn down. I do not regret the decision; it has been a challenging, wonderful experience. (What else would I do with my time?) I am proud of the progress of the BoT and continue to be excited about our work with the RBCS Community to move the school to greater heights.

Nancy Bunn, Vice President. My son Michael is in 7th grade at RBCS. I have served on the BoT for six years and as Vice President for the last two. I am an attorney for almost 30 years and used to try personal injury matters. However, I decided to be more flexible with my schedule in order to better facilitate my son’s educational and personal growth, and to become more active in the school community. Therefore, I opened my own practice several years ago specializing in school law. This experience serves to enhance my service on the BoT.

Kevin Kelleher. I’ve been a Trustee since 2006 and was the first parent elected after bylaws were changed to allow the parent community to nominate. My wife Renee and I are the parents of : Kyle (6th gr), Zoe (4th gr), and Jack (2nd gr). We are very happy with our Charter School experience and feel fortunate the state has given Red Bank residents a choice in public education. I am proud of the decisions the current Board has made on the direction of the school and look forward to continuing the momentum we’ve established the last couple of years.

Marylyn McNeil. I am the Vice President and Athletics Director at Monmouth University and passionate about the opportunities provided by extra curricular activities for all young people, teaching values of teamwork, cooperation, leadership and the pursuit of excellence. Working in education for 40 years, I truly believe in the innovative nature of the Charter School and the opportunity to make a difference.

Michelle Welsh. I am in the 2nd year of my term as a parent-elected BoT member and am delighted to be part of the forward momentum of the Board and of the progress and growth of RBCS. I am the proud parent of Mackenzie (6th gr) and Kevin (2nd gr). My husband Michael and I were both raised in Red Bank and have seen many transitions endured by Red Bank schools. Our choice to seek alternative education through the Charter School has been very rewarding to us and our children. We believe that it is more beneficial to be PRO-active rather than RE-active in our schools today and encourage all families to get involved in any way they can. I look forward to being part of future growth and expansion of RBCS.

C. Darryl Hughes. Manager, Cultural Diversity, Meridian Health. I joined the BoT in 2004 and it’s been quite a learning experience. Through all the ups and downs, I never lost sight of what compelled me to support this school: the dedication of the faculty, administration, and RBCS parenting community making sure our students receive the best education possible. I was inspired by the philosophy and character of the school the moment I toured in the basement at Trinity with Meredith, and that inspiration has never wavered. It only takes a walk through the halls on any given day at RBCS to remind me of what is important here: our students.  I hope my contributions as a Trustee have demonstrated that commitment, and I am proud to be a small part of such an outstanding and progressive school community.

Kathy McGuire. I have been involved with the Red Bank Charter School since my daughter Mary Kate, currently an 8th grade student, started here in 1st grade. I also have a daughter, Erin, who teaches 3rd grade. I have always supported the mission and innovative educational programs at the Charter School. This is my 3rd year as a BoT member and I am proud to be a part of the success and growth of such a wonderful school.

Roger J. Foss, Esq. Like many other attorneys in private practice, I have found that charities and other  volunteer groups add a great deal to the quality of life in our community. Over my 34-year career in the practice of law in Red Bank, I have developed an interest in education, disaster relief, mental health, the arts, and other areas of citizen involvement.  Red Bank has identified the need for an innovative program like the Charter School, and I am pleased to bring to the Board of Trustees the experience which I have accumulated in my work on several other boards to promote the goals of this admirable program.
